This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This video focuses on Plato's work, the Symposium, and specifically on the dialectical discussion between Socrates and Agathon. In the course of this discussion, the position Agathon has just argued for, i.e. that Love is good and beautiful is examined, and argued not to be the case, since Love desires what it lacks

This video focuses on Plato's work, the Symposium, and specifically on the speech made by Agathon, examining the argument he makes that Love is actually the master of all of the four cardinal virtues -- Temperance, Courage, Justice, and Wisdom

This video focuses on Plato's work, the Symposium, and specifically on the speech made by Agathon. In that speech, he argues that Love is the most beautiful of the gods, and this video examines his argument and its sub-arguments.

This is a personal video in which I unbox a recently ordered Deering Banjo Company Longneck Banjo Case -- a replacement for the 50+ years old original case that my equally ancient Vega Folklore Banjo has been stored in.
In addition to talking about the product itself, I discuss why this particular banjo is particularly important to me -- it belonged to my father, who died when I was 11 years old. I also discuss the rather unconventional kinds of music I play on his/my banjo.

This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This video focuses on Plato's work, the Symposium, and specifically on the speech made by Aristophanes. After distinguishing between three original "genders", he focuses specifically on male-male attraction, arguing that men who are attracted to men rather than to women are more masculine and better fitted for political life.

This video focuses on Plato's work, the Symposium, and specifically on the speech made by Aristophanes. This is the last of nine monthly lectures and discussions in a new series, led by Dr. Gregory B. Sadler at the historic Kingston Public Library. Each of the lectures focuses on a set of perspectives on anger, coming from ancient or medieval texts in literature, philosophy, or religion.
The series comes to a conclusion with an examination of another systematic perspective on anger, that of the great medieval Dominican philosopher and theologian, Thomas Aquinas.
During the talk, among other matters, we discuss Aquinas' background and place in the history of ideas, the many sources for Thomas' dialectical synthesis, his approach to anger as an emotion, and his views on anger as a moral phenomenon.
